which contains a lot of historical detail. Marianne Katz-Marks published a very useful pictorial reference book (ref. 7) which provides an identification and valuation guide.
This article distils details from these and other references and adds some newly researched information. My aim is to clarify the early history of Fieldings Pottery, provide examples of the good quality Majolica they produced and, hopefully, stimulate further interest!
BRIEF HISTORY OF FIELDINGS POTTERY
The various references are unclear and even contradictory in a number of areas, but my best view of the key dates is:
- Simon Fielding born
- Simon's son, Abraham, born
- Abraham apprenticed to Blyth Colour Works, Creswell
Simon purchased Blyth Colour Works
- Abraham put in charge of Colour Works which then traded as "S Fielding"
- Simon Fielding invested money in the Railway Pottery, which traded as F Hackney and J Kirkham & Co making "Majolica, Green Glaze, Rockingham, Fancy goods and Earthenware".
